Newsletter 9, Spring '09
Greetings again from beautiful Queenstown - welcome to our LSQ update.
In spring, skiing is often at its best, but with pleasant daytime temperatures ranging from 8-22°C (48–75°F), it’s difficult to not be thinking about beaches, relaxing in the sun and dining al fresco. All of which is possible right here, right now!
Queenstown update…
Congratulations to the 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games - the inaugural games combined over 800 athletes, 40 countries, 400 volunteers and 37 events over 10 days. Prime Minister John Key paid tribute to the many volunteers who were instrumental to the success of the event and went on to indicate his support of the 2011 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games.
A vibrant new Queenstown Television Commercial - Destination Queenstown's new television commercial aired on Sky Television for the duration of the 100% Pure NZ Winter Games. "The strategy for the commercial was to create a dynamic piece which will have enough impact to 'cut through' the normal TV advertising clutter and quickly become recognisable and differentiated from other NZ regional commercials. In only 30 seconds it's hard to get too many messages across, so it's about diversity and the all year round proposition," said DQ General Manager – Marketing, Graham Budd.

Glenorchy's surrounding landscape has become a prime location for film scouts and was chosen to depict many scenes in the three award winning Lord of the Rings movies.

Legendary Queenstown…
Legend of the lake
Queenstown sits on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, some 399m at its deepest, five kilometres at its widest and an impressive 84km long.
According to Maori legend, when a fearsome giant called Matau stole the beautiful princess Manata away from her tribe, her father, the chief, offered her hand in marriage to the man who freed her. Only the warrior Matakauri was brave enough to accept the challenge. He found the giant sleeping in a valley with Manata tied up nearby. With all his might he could not break the rope with his pounamu axe. In desperation, Manata begged him to flee before the giant woke. Her tears broke the magical bonds and he swept her to safety.
The warrior returned and built a fire around Matau which burned fiercely and etched his outline into the ground, which is now Lake Wakatipu, with the feet at Kingston, knees at Queenstown and head at Glenorchy.
The mysterious twist in the tale is that the lake actually rises and falls around 12-20 centimetres every few minutes, which is said to be the giant's heart still beating.
