Newsletter - Issue 5, Autumn 2008

We’ve had a wonderful summer with stunning weather and the welcome buzz of tourists. Hopefully your business has been thriving too and you’ve also managed to enjoy a little time out. Roll on the turning of leaves and vibrant colours that transform our Southern Lakes landscape in autumn.

Queenstown update...

Qantas Tasman Flights
An extra weekly Qantas flight between Sydney and Queenstown has been announced. The 168-seat direct flight will run on Wednesdays from 24 September. Qantas already runs a year-round Saturday flight service and direct Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane flights in winter.

Airport gets art
Visitors arriving at Queenstown International Airport will be greeted by the striking new Mark Hill sculpture. This Maori influenced work – comprising three tall structures – celebrates the manawhenua or people of the land and is titled “welcome o visitors from afar”.

World eyes up NZ Open
The outstanding success of the Michael Hill NZ Open was wholeheartedly celebrated and planning is underway for the 2008 tournament, scheduled for late November or early December. We’ll keep you posted as details unfold…..

Seasonal highlight…

Autumnal Arrowtown
Historic Arrowtown, the picturesque Gibbston Valley Winery and exhilarating Kawarau bungy bridge are highlights of our half day scenic tour. Bathed in russet reds, rich oranges and warm golds the Wakatipu region is an unforgettable place to explore at this time of year. See our brochure for more information.

Driver guide profile... Kevin Reynolds

Kevin’s inspirational motto is ‘do it while you can’. Originally from Cheshire in England, Kevin worked in South Africa and Australia before making Queenstown his family home eleven years ago.

Fly fishing is an absolute passion for Kevin – it’s a large part of the reason he settled in the Wakatipu region. “I could only have dreamed of the rivers and lakes accessible to me in New Zealand, compared to the options back in the UK.”

Driver guide profile... Kevin Reynolds

“The fact that trout live in clear fresh cool water takes me into some wonderful countryside. A few of my favourite spots would be the 4000 ft high Poolburn Dam, up in the Rough Ridge Range behind Alexandra, where big brown trout cruise the shallow waters,” says Kevin.

“As a driver guide I love meeting people and showing them around this beautiful part of the world. It’s even better if I happen to have a fly rod tucked under the seat for those unavoidable down times!”

New recruits...

We’re delighted to announce growth of our team and extend a warm welcome to new driver guides Nevil Constable and Kevin Burdon. Kevin spent many years as a Southland farmer and Nevil formerly ran a courier franchise. Both know the region well and love its unique landscape. More on Kevin and Nevil in our next issue.

Fond farewell…

It’s with great sadness that we say goodbye to Walter Zimmerman, an industry visionary and one of the most caring and gentle men you’d ever have the good fortune to meet. A well known and highly respected Southland figure, Walter is survived by his wife Dale and his children living in NZ and overseas. Our thoughts are with Walter’s family during this very sad time – he’ll be greatly missed.

Thank you...

Thanks for your ongoing support. We’re looking forward to being of continued service to you throughout a prosperous 2008.
